This morning stop at the Jabbok River (Gen. 32:22) before traveling to the Decapolis city, Jerash, the "Pompeii of the East." The ancient city of Jerash lays claim to having an unbroken chain of human occupation dating back more than 6,500 years! See the Street of Columns, Hadrian's Triumphal Arch, the Roman Forum and the Temples of Diana and Zeus. While in Jerash, witness a recreation of an ancient chariot race ― the only one of its kind in the world. Continue to Ajloun, Saladin's 12th-century castle and enjoy the panoramic view it offers of the entire region. Dinner and overnight in Amman.
Day 4 - Amman - Citadel - Volun-Tourism
Today enjoy a tour of Amman, the capital of Jordan, which was known as Rabbath Ammon and Philadelphia in Biblical times. Nestled among hills, Amman is a fascinating city with diverse sites, flavors and shops to tempt its visitors. Visit the Citadel which has stood since the ancient times of the Ammonites and the Roman Theater and spend some time browsing the many shops nearby. This afternoon offers a unique opportunity to volunteer at one of Jordan’s many non-profit organizations. Allow us to match you with an opportunity to assist handicapped children or adults that may be physically challenged. You’ll be delighted to enjoy true Jordanian hospitality while making a connection with those that most need your assistance. It’s sure to be a highlight of your stay in Jordan. Dinner and overnight in Amman.
Day 5 - Amman - Mount Nebo - Madeba - Mukawi - Petra
This morning travel to Mt. Nebo (Deut. 34:1) where Moses gained his glimpse of the Promised Land; enjoy the breathtaking view of the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Jerusalem. Continue to Madaba, the Byzantine center of master mosaicists; see the oldest surviving mosaic map of the Holy Land. Time permitting; visit Mukawir (Machaerus) ― a Hasmonean fortress built by Aleander Jannaeus and later restored by Herod the Great. Josephus records that Herod “built a wall round the very summit and erected towers at the corners, each 27.4 m high. In the middle of this enclosure he built a palace, breath-taking in size and beauty". When Herod's son, Herod Antipas, divorced his Nabataean wife to marry Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, John the Baptist spoke against his behavior. Consequently, John was imprisoned, and Herodias' daughter Salome danced and demanded the Baptist's head on a platter here at Machaerus. During the Judaean war many refugees fled from Jerusalem to Machaerus for safety. It was finally destroyed, again by the Romans, in 72 AD. Arrive in Petra for dinner and overnight.
Day 6 - Petra
Today your desert adventure visits the 2,000-year-old Nabatean city of Petra, the "rose-colored city half as old as time." Travel through a narrow "siq" flanked by towering cliffs. At its end, see Petra's most spectacular monument, the Treasury ― carved out of the solid rock from the side of the mountain. Also visit the Roman Theatre, the High Place and elaborate Royal Tombs. Dinner and overnite in Petra.
Day 7 - Petra - Little Petra - Wadi Rum - Jeep Ride - Aqaba
After breakfast ascend to Little Petra. Like Petra it has ledges, stairs, caves and hand-carved buildings in the multi-colored sandstone. You will also pass the community of Umm Sayhoun for the Bedouin families that were relocated from deep within Petra. Aside from the ecological damage caused by their flocks, there was a desire to minimize the interaction between tribesmen and tourists. During 1985-1987 ― with government assistance to provide housing ― the move was completed. Travel south to Wadi Rum ― virtually untouched by humanity and its destructive forces. This amazing place offers a jeep ride up and over sanddunes and around amazing rock formations that look like towering skyscrapers eroded by time and etched with ancient graffiti-like drawings ― the very same area where Lawrence of Arabia was filmed! It’s a true adventure that will long be remembered! Dinner and overnight in Aqaba.
Day 8 - Aqaba - Umm Ar Rasas - Dead Sea
This morning enjoy a late breakfast and a walk along the Gulf of Aqaba ― the Red Sea. Early this afternoon journey north along the King’s Highway to Umm Ar Rasas. This rectangular walled city is mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. Just outside the city walls is the recently unearthed Church of Saint Stephen with its perfectly preserved outstanding mosaic floor, the largest of its kind to be discovered in Jordan and second only to the world famous mosaic map at Madaba. For its unique blend of civilizations, Um er-Rasas was inscribed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2004. Arrive at the Dead Sea in time for a swim. Experience the buoyancy of the highly therapeutic Dead Sea waters ― it's simply indescribable! Dinner and overnite at the Dead Sea.
Day 9 - Bethany Beyond The Jordan - Leisure Time
Early this morning visit Bethany Beyond the Jordan – believed to be the most accurate site of Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist. Take time to tour this newly found and restored site ― it’s amazing! This afternoon return to your luxurious hotel for some rest and relaxation ― leisure time. Dinner and overnight at the Dead Sea.
Day 10 - En Route
Departure transfer to Queen Alia International Airportfor your flight(s) home or continue on an extension. While en route, treasure your experiences in Jordan ― Memories that will last a lifetime!
